500+ Reviews

Electrical codes exist to prevent fires and electrocution. When you remodel, add an addition, or sell your home, bringing wiring up to current National Electrical Code (NEC) standards may be required. We handle the full process: assessment, permit, upgrade work, and inspection. Every job is done by licensed electricians who know current code requirements.

The Details

What You Need to Know

The NEC is updated every 3 years, and each update adds safety requirements. Recent additions include: AFCI protection for nearly all living spaces (prevents arc-caused fires), GFCI protection expanded to include garages, basements, and laundry rooms, tamper-resistant receptacles in all new or replaced outlets, and whole-house surge protection at the panel.

Common code violations we find in Utah homes: missing GFCI outlets near water (kitchens, bathrooms, garages), no AFCI protection in bedrooms and living areas, two-wire (ungrounded) outlets in older homes, improper junction box covers or missing boxes, overloaded circuits with too many devices, and aluminum wiring connections that haven't been remediated.

We work with all Utah municipalities on the permit and inspection process. Every jurisdiction has slightly different requirements and timelines. We pull the permits, schedule the inspections, and ensure everything passes on the first visit.

Got Questions?

Electrical Code Compliance FAQ

?When is code compliance required?
During remodels, room additions, kitchen/bathroom renovations, when adding major circuits (EV charger, hot tub), when selling a home (if inspection flags issues), and to satisfy insurance requirements.
?Do I have to bring my entire house up to code?
Generally no. Code compliance is triggered in the areas being worked on. If you remodel a kitchen, the kitchen's wiring must meet current code, but the rest of the house is grandfathered. However, safety hazards (like Federal Pacific panels) should be addressed regardless.
?What is AFCI protection?
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) breakers detect dangerous electrical arcing — a leading cause of electrical fires. Current code requires AFCI protection in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and most other living spaces.
?What's the cost of bringing wiring up to code?
It varies widely depending on the scope. Adding GFCI outlets: $150-$300 each. AFCI breaker upgrades: $100-$200 per circuit. Full rewire of a room: $1,000-$3,000. We provide a detailed quote after assessment.
