Indoor Air Quality

Breathe Cleaner Air
In Every Room.

The EPA says indoor air is 2–5x more polluted than outdoor air. Utah adds inversions, dry winters, and wildfire smoke. We fix all of it with filtration, purification, humidity control, and ventilation.

Why Air Quality Matters in Utah

Utah homes face unique air quality challenges that standard furnace filters can't handle alone.

Winter Inversions
1

Winter Inversions

Cold air traps pollutants in the valley for weeks. Your home's air recirculates the same particles unless you have proper filtration and purification in place.

Dry Climate
2

Dry Climate

Utah winter humidity drops below 20%. This causes dry skin, nosebleeds, cracked wood, and increased respiratory illness. Whole-home humidifiers maintain the healthy 35-45% range.

Radon & Tight Homes

Radon & Tight Homes

Utah's geology produces elevated radon levels. Modern tight construction traps it inside. ERVs provide fresh air exchange while radon mitigation addresses the source.

How it works

How an ERV keeps Utah homes fresh without wasting energy

Modern Utah homes are sealed so tightly that CO2, odors, humidity, and radon build up. An Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) solves both sides of the problem — it swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air, while recovering up to 80% of the heating or cooling energy from the air it's exhausting.

Diagram showing how an Energy Recovery Ventilator balances fresh incoming and stale outgoing air streams through a heat/moisture exchange core

The exchange core transfers heat and moisture — never mixes the two air streams.

  1. 1

Stale indoor air is pulled out

A dedicated exhaust duct draws humid, CO₂-heavy air from the bathrooms, kitchen, and living areas — the rooms that build up the most moisture and odors.

  2. 2

Fresh outdoor air is pulled in

A second duct pulls filtered outdoor air through a dedicated intake on an exterior wall — completely separate from your furnace return so it never short-cycles the system.

  3. 3

    Energy moves between the streams

Inside the ERV core, the two air streams pass each other without mixing. Heat and moisture transfer through a thin membrane — up to 80% of the comfort energy you already paid for stays in the home.

  4. 4

    Balanced, tempered air is delivered

Fresh outdoor air — now pre-warmed in winter or pre-cooled in summer — is distributed through your existing ductwork, while the same volume of stale air is pushed outside. Zero pressure imbalance.

A Layered Approach to Clean Air

No single product solves every air quality problem. The best results come from combining the right solutions for your home.

The AYSP Approach

  • MERV 13 media filtration captures 85%+ of particles
  • UV-C / REME HALO kills pathogens — not just captures them
  • Whole-home humidifier maintains healthy moisture levels
  • ERV provides continuous fresh air without energy waste
  • Radon testing and mitigation if levels are elevated
  • Every component sized and verified for your system

The 1-Inch Filter Approach

  • Cheap 1-inch filter captures less than 20% of particles
  • No purification — just recirculates the same air
  • Dry air all winter — portable humidifiers in each room
  • No ventilation plan — stuffy air and elevated CO2
  • Never tested for radon — invisible threat ignored
  • No airflow verification — restricted systems waste energy

Indoor Air Quality FAQs

What's the most important IAQ upgrade I can make?
A 4-inch MERV 13 media filter is the foundation. It captures 85%+ of airborne particles, lasts 6-12 months between changes, and costs $300-$600 installed. Start there and add UV, humidity, or ventilation based on your specific concerns.
How do UV lights differ from REME HALO?
UV-C lights are passive — they kill pathogens as air passes through the ductwork. REME HALO is active — it releases ionized hydrogen peroxide throughout your entire home, purifying air and surfaces even when the furnace isn't running. Many homeowners install both.
Is radon really a problem in Utah?
Yes. The Utah DEQ reports that 1 in 3 homes test above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. The Wasatch Front and Utah Valley are particularly affected. Radon is the #2 cause of lung cancer — testing is the only way to know your levels.
Does my home need an ERV?
If your home was built after 2000, has been air-sealed, or you notice stuffiness, window condensation, or elevated CO2, you likely don't have adequate ventilation. An ERV brings in fresh air while recovering energy — fresh air without the energy waste.
Will a humidifier increase mold risk?
Not if properly installed and controlled. We install humidistats that automatically shut off at 45-50% humidity. Over-humidification (above 55%) can cause mold, which is why proper controls and monitoring are essential.
Can I combine multiple IAQ products?
Absolutely — and we recommend it. The best indoor air comes from a layered approach: MERV 13 filtration (capture particles) + UV/REME HALO (kill pathogens) + humidifier (moisture control) + ERV (fresh air). We'll help you prioritize based on your budget and concerns.
