Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)

Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)

Protects your plumbing from high water pressure that causes leaks, burst pipes, and premature fixture failure. We test your pressure and install the right PRV for your home.

Learn More
Expansion Tank

Expansion Tank

Required when a PRV or backflow preventer creates a closed system. Prevents pressure spikes from thermal expansion that damage water heaters, fixtures, and pipes.

The Why

Why Water Treatment Matters

Utah's water is harder and contains more dissolved minerals than most of the country. Without proper treatment, you're paying the price in damaged appliances and compromised health.

The Cost of Hard Water

1

Water Heater Damage

Scale buildup reduces efficiency by 20-30% and shortens tank life from 12-15 years to 8-10 years.

2

Appliance Failure

Dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers fail 3-5 years earlier due to mineral deposits.

3

Plumbing Issues

Mineral scale narrows pipes and restricts water flow, leading to pressure problems and costly repairs.

Health & Quality Concerns

1

Skin & Hair Problems

Hard water prevents soap from lathering and leaves mineral residue that dries out skin and hair.

2

Contaminant Exposure

Utah tap water can contain lead, PFAS (forever chemicals), chlorine byproducts, and other harmful substances.

3

Energy Waste

Scale buildup forces water heaters to work harder, increasing energy consumption and utility bills.

The Layered Treatment Approach

Most homes benefit from a layered approach tailored to their specific water quality. Start with water testing to understand what you're dealing with, then build a system that addresses your unique challenges.

Whole-House Solutions

  • Water softener for hardness
  • Sediment filters for particles
  • Carbon filters for taste & odor
  • UV systems for bacteria control

Point-of-Use Solutions

  • Reverse osmosis for drinking water
  • Faucet filters for specific areas
  • Shower filters for skin/hair health
  • Refrigerator filters for ice

How it works

Inside a multi-stage RO system

Utah tap water carries hardness, chlorine by-products, sediment, and — in some zip codes — PFAS and lead. A properly built reverse-osmosis system strips all of that out in discrete stages, then stores clean water ready to drink. Here's the path your water actually takes before it reaches your glass.

Diagram of a multi-stage reverse-osmosis system showing sediment pre-filter, carbon block, RO membrane, storage tank, and dedicated faucet

Schematic of a typical under-sink RO — pre-filtration protects the membrane, membrane strips dissolved contaminants, post-filter polishes taste.

  1. 1

    Sediment pre-filter

A 5-micron wound filter catches rust, silt, and sand before they can pit the membrane. Protects every stage downstream.

  2. 2

    Carbon block

A pressed-carbon block pulls chlorine, chloramines, and organic taste/odor out of the water. Chlorine alone destroys RO membranes — this stage is non-negotiable.

  3. 3

    RO membrane

Water is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane at line pressure. Lead, PFAS, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, and 95–99% of total dissolved solids stay on the reject side.

  4. 4

    Storage tank

Clean permeate collects in a pressurized bladder tank so you get a steady flow at the faucet — no waiting on the membrane to keep up with you.

  5. 5

    Polishing post-filter & dedicated faucet

A final carbon polish scrubs any residual taste picked up in storage, and a dedicated air-gap faucet delivers water straight to your glass.

Common Questions

Water & Plumbing FAQs

How hard is Utah's water?
Very hard. Most Utah areas measure 15-25+ grains per gallon (gpg), compared to the 3-7 gpg range considered 'slightly hard.' This level of hardness causes significant scale buildup, reduces water heater efficiency by 20-30%, and shortens appliance lifespan.
Do I need a water softener AND an RO system?
They solve different problems. A softener handles hardness (scale, spotting, dry skin) for the whole house. An RO system provides purified drinking water by removing dissolved contaminants like lead, PFAS, and chlorine byproducts. Many Utah homes benefit from both.
How do I know if my water is safe?
Start with your city's annual Consumer Confidence Report. For more certainty, we offer water testing that measures hardness, TDS, pH, chlorine, and common contaminants. The results guide our recommendations.
How much salt does a water softener use?
A properly sized, modern high-efficiency softener for a typical Utah home uses 40-80 lbs of salt per month. Salt costs about $6-8 per 40-lb bag. That's roughly $10-15/month in salt — far less than the damage hard water causes.
Should I get a tankless water heater?
Tankless heaters provide unlimited hot water and last 20+ years vs. 8-12 for tanks. They cost more upfront but save on energy bills. The right choice depends on your hot water demand, gas line capacity, and budget.
