A dedicated circuit serves a single appliance or outlet, providing reliable power without sharing capacity with other devices. They're required by code for many appliances (dishwasher, disposal, microwave, refrigerator) and essential for workshops, server rooms, medical equipment, and any high-draw application where tripped breakers aren't acceptable.

The Details

What You Need to Know

Kitchen remodels are the most common reason for dedicated circuits. Current NEC code requires dedicated circuits for: refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, and two 20A small appliance circuits for countertops. Older homes often have a single circuit shared among multiple kitchen outlets — a constant tripping hazard with modern appliances.

Workshop and garage circuits need to match the equipment. A table saw draws 15A, a welder draws 30-50A, and an air compressor can spike to 30A+ on startup. We calculate the actual load requirements and install the correct wire gauge and breaker size. Under-sizing is a fire hazard; over-sizing defeats the breaker's protective function.

We also install dedicated circuits for: home offices (computers, monitors, printers shouldn't share circuits with HVAC or other high-draw devices), hot tubs and saunas (240V, 40-60A), home theaters and audio equipment, sump pumps and radon fans, and medical/home health equipment that requires reliable uninterrupted power.

Got Questions?

Dedicated Circuits FAQ

?What appliances need dedicated circuits?
Code requires dedicated circuits for: refrigerator, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, washer, dryer, HVAC equipment, water heater, and EV charger. Additionally, any appliance drawing 50%+ of a circuit's capacity should have its own dedicated circuit.
?How much does a dedicated circuit cost?
Typically $250-$500 per circuit depending on distance from panel, routing complexity, and amperage. Kitchen remodels needing 4-6 dedicated circuits are often quoted as a package.
?Can I add circuits to my existing panel?
If your panel has available breaker slots and adequate amperage capacity, yes. If not, a panel upgrade or sub-panel may be needed first. We check during the initial assessment.
?Is a permit needed?
New circuits typically require an electrical permit and inspection. We handle the permit process as part of the job.
