Furnace Blowing Cold Air? Here's What's Wrong

Heat call activated but cold air at the vents? Here are the 5 most common Utah causes and how to triage in 5 minutes.

Cold air from a heat-set furnace means the burner isn't firing OR isn't staying lit, but the blower is running anyway. Five common causes — three of which the homeowner can fix.

Diagnostic

Most likely causes (in order)

Walk through the list top-to-bottom. The first cause matches roughly half of cases we see in Utah; if it doesn't fit your symptoms, move to the next.

1

Thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO

Most common

The blower runs continuously regardless of whether the burner is firing. Between heat cycles, you feel cool air at the vents. Switch fan to AUTO.

2

Furnace in lockout from failed ignition

Common

Tried 2–3 times to ignite, gave up, locked out for 60 minutes. Blower may run; burner is off. See /problems/furnace-not-igniting.

3

Dirty flame sensor

Common

Burner lights briefly then goes out within 5 seconds. Blower keeps running through the post-purge cycle then shuts off. Repeats next cycle.

4

Pilot light out (older standing-pilot furnaces only)

Less common

Pre-2000 furnaces with a constantly-burning pilot. If the pilot blows out (drafty install, dirty thermocouple), the gas valve closes.

DIY first

Safe checks you can do today

Each step is labeled by safety level. Stop at any “Pro only” step — that's where the diagnostic crosses into work that needs gauges, multimeters, or live electrical access.

Check the thermostat — fan should be AUTO, not ON

Safe DIY

Single most common fix. Takes 5 seconds.

Listen for ignition through the front panel

Safe DIY

Set thermostat 5°F above room temp. Within 60 seconds you should hear: blower start → click → whoosh of gas igniting. If you hear blower but no whoosh, ignition is failing.

Reset by toggling the furnace wall switch

Safe DIY

Off 30 seconds, back on. Clears 60-minute lockouts.

Stop and call

When you should call us instead

  • Burner ignites then dies repeatedly — flame sensor cleaning is the most likely fix
  • Pilot won't stay lit on an older standing-pilot furnace — thermocouple replacement
  • Furnace is 12+ years old AND erratic — schedule a tune-up + heat-exchanger inspection

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will my air conditioner running affect the furnace?

+

AC and furnace share the indoor blower. If the AC is set on a different thermostat schedule, you can get 'cold air' if the AC is running with the furnace fan on AUTO. Check both schedules.
